Halftime stopped talking as his phone rang. Junya looked down at his lap
as to hang his head in shame. Junya fondled in his pockets and searched for a
business card, but realized he never had any in the first place. He started to
fondle around the glove compartment, forgetting he was not in Khevasiah.s
Land Rover.
"What are you looking for?"
Khevasiah asked sarcastically.
"Why...why you looking through my shit homie?"
The other man in the
back shouted. After that, he leaned back in the back seat, seeming to doze off.
"A de..."
"A demo! A demo! A mother fucking demo!!! Khevasiah interrupted
Junya excitedly. You got some asshole of a nerve. As a matter of fact, get the
fuck out of this car right now!"
Halftime started to die laughing. The other man in the back jumped
awake out of his sleep and started laughing also. Khevasiah was not laughing.
She was serious. She looked Junya dead in his face, as she unlocked the power
locks in the vehicle. She took her other hand and started the vehicle. Junya
looked back at Khevasiah with a smirk on his face, as if to say he knew
Khevasiah was not serious. Then Junya quickly realized that Khevasiah was
very serious; more serious than he ever knew.
"Junya, we had our fun, our times, and our laughs. We even got it on, and
you know what, where I am, and where I want to be are not the same place. I
have been putting up with your broke, insecure, no goal having ass for too long.
This trip, to be honest, was a Litmus test for you. I knew deep down that you
would fuck this up; not know how to control nor handle yourself. I wanted so
badly for you to just be the Junya that I know, the one I fell in love with. But you
clearly got some issues that I have not control over, and obviously you don't. I
can.t trust you, and I cannot be with someone that I do not trust.
Do not take this
as a thing of the moment, but this has been on my mind for some time now, and
this trip, this trip solidified it for me, and sealed your fate. When I got here...
"Wha...what are you saying?"
Junya said.
"I think she said it homie..."
Halftime interjected.
"Shut up please Half... let me handle this..."
"Oh, I see. Let me see if I got this right... uh correct"
Junya said.
"You
got the audacity to sit here all highty-tighty in front of me right now. You
dragged me out here for me to make a fool of myself? Not to keep you company
or to make some moves on my own? Who do you think I am? Some chump?
Some pencil pouch carrying know nothing dude? I graduated college. I came
back to the hood to make a difference. I rescued you from yourself! Your selfish,
egotistical self. I encouraged you to be better than you are. I pushed you to get
to where you at. How you gonna sit here, in another niggas car and tell me that I
sealed my fate.? Any other nigga would have knocked you down by now.
Won.t nobody put up with your nagging ass like I do. Why you dumping me? I
should have dumped you a long time ago. You know what, fuck you!"
Junya opened the door and slammed it shut. Khevasiah rolled the
window down and looked at Junya leaning toward the passenger seat. Junya
had tears running down his face.
"You didn.t mean that, but I did."
Khevasiah said softly. Khevasiah put
the vehicle in gear and drove off. She beeped the horn as she disappeared into
the New York City night. Junya was alone again.
