"How close are we to the hospital? Junya asked as if he were tired.
"Oh...so you and girlfriend how do you say...beefing?" The cab driver
said sarcastically.
"It ain.t that dude...she really, literally left me for dead tonight. I mean,
we came all the way from Connecticut, and..."
"Connecticut! The cab driver said out loud. He slammed on the brakes
and turned around, speeding back towards the opposite direction, zooming by
sights that Junya had already seen. The cab driver then made a few turns, and in
no time, Junya was at the hospital. I terribly sorry sir...do not worry, I pay
drive...on me...have a good night!"
Junya was utterly confused. The cab driver went from talking about
where he lived, to women, to the way that shit went out in NYC, then he turned
around and got to the hospital in what seemed to be less than 5 minutes was
scary: Junya felt the cab driver was driving around until Junya died from his
injuries, then the cab driver would take him somewhere and rob his corpse;
Hearing that Junya was from Connecticut, the cab driver felt there would be too
much suspicion and problems for him, so he decided not to go with his alleged
plan. Junya looked up at the emergency room entrance of the hospital. He
patted his jacket and pants pockets feeling for his wallet. Junya walked into the
hospital, and immediately looked for the in-patient nurse.
Being early in the morning, the lines were not long: a woman was holding her small child, and
another man was there nursing what seemed to be a burn wound to his forearm.
"Next! You, you young man, come up to the window..." A fat white
woman wearing glasses yelled for Junya to come to her window. Junya sat
down, looking up at the woman, planning his approach. Not being from New
York, trying to see the doctor when it was not a real emergency, were going to be
expensive. Taking into consideration what the cab driver told him, then failing
in his attempt to win over Junya, Junya felt himself in the same situation. If the
persons in the hospital mistook Junya for a vagabond off of the street looking for
some free care off of some wallet they stole, he would not be seen by a doctor.
The security guards from the next shift would do a sweep of the waiting room
loiterers, and probably lock Junya up. Junya placed his hands shakingly on the
desk, looked over his shoulder, and began to speak to the nurse.
"I...I am looking for my aunt, she is a doctor at this hospital...I...I was
beat up by her husband! Her husband thinks that she is cheating on him with
me, and I am her nephew! I do not mean to bring you inside of this dramatic
episode, but nurse if you can please bring me to my aunt, I will be very, very
grateful."
"And how much alcohol have you been drinking sir?" The nurse said
sarcastically. The nurse seemed to not believe Junya.s story to get ahead of the
patients in the waiting room just to see a doctor.
"Why don't you go on one of those television shows with that story
kid...next!"
"But wait maam... Junya said. I kid you none, my aunt...she is..." Junya
started looking around at documents and signs around the nurse.s desk.
"Dr. Miledge? The nurse said! Oh...ha ha! She mentioned your name,
how could I have forgotten! You are..."
"Junya! Yea! I knew you were good peoples! Junya said relieved. People
say me and her look alike!"
"Oh, you have to excuse me, it has been a terribly long night. Shootings,
stabbings, rapes, the usual for a city night. Your aunt is down the corridor in the
third room to the right."
"Thank you so much nurse." Junya said.
Junya then got up from the desk and went to see the doctor.
Walking down the corridor to see Dr. Miledge, Junya felt a saddening and
guilt stricken presence come over him. He looked back in the direction of the
waiting room, and he saw the woman with the small child placing a cold towel
over the child.s forehead; the child must have had a fever. There was another
child standing next to her crying, because his sister could not stop bleeding from
her "stomach". Junya came back to the waiting room, and signaled for the
woman with the small child to come over to him. The woman looked, then she
saw that Junya was standing behind the doors leading to the doctors.
"Come, Dr. Miledge will see you now. Junya said comfortingly.
"Thank you so much sir!" The woman with the child said.
Junya.s side did not hurt as much. He felt the pressure on his side go
away almost instantaneously. Junya rushed towards the emergency room exit,
but then turned back to ask a man for some change.
