"We are way past apology my lad...now, what was I saying...oh yes...when you sign a record contract, the label owns you for a certain financial obligation. It is like a loan. We front you money to help promote and sell your project; over buying boats and flying all over the country in private planes, Mercedes, you name it, I have seen it done. The key is to use that money as wisely as you can. If you can campaign back home within your regional market, then you will have as many of these watches as you so choose.
But keep in mind,
if you get greedy early, then you will be stuck to foot the bill, and any record
project that you come out with MUST meet financial standards. If not, you keep
recording until you do. If you are good enough, and wise enough to land
endorsements, then by all means go for it. IF you do not recoup the advance, the
label can either drop you and take the loss, or release you so that you can sign to
a label that may better suit your angle of music. Keep in mind, you don't spend
until they buy: they being the public. Like I said, you have a good head on your
shoulder, and you listen well.
Let us see how much you have learned. I am
going to attend to my wife. I want to hear your name five times in discussion as
I work the room. If I hear of you, that must mean that you can start a buzz
simply with your charm. Work the room. I am not saying to ask everyone about
a deal, or tell them that you met me. I especially hope that you would not tell
them about this agreement. Oh, and it can not be just women...I know you want
to flirt, and that shit may work, but now, this is business.
Remember, the men
make all the decisions in this industry, the women just look pretty reiterating it.
So go on Junya; I won.t forget your name. Enjoy, and I hope to see you later..."
"And what happens if I don't get people to talk about me once I leave?"
"Then it means that you did not do your job, and you cannot work for me
in this business. If I asked you to go to the store and get me a grape soda, would
you come back to me with an orange?"
"No, I would look first, then ask to make sure that they had grape, and if
they didn.t, I would go to another store to see if they had grape..."
"The same principal applies. Remember Junya, you told me what YOU
want. If I hear other people agree with me if I ask them, then it shows that you
are focused. You can.t have a different story for every person that approaches.
You must ALWAYS have your story straight. Kiss ass once you.ve seen it, not on
top of the jeans; there is no feeling there!"
Gerald took the glass of champagne out of Junya.s hand and proceeded to
meet his wife whom had been watching the entire conversation. Junya reached
down to pick up his glass, but he noticed that it had been taken up. Junya looked
over at Gerald and his wife, and Gerald gave Junya thumbs up as his wife
shooed him to go into the more sociable area of the gathering. Junya winked his
eye and walked into the party.
