Allen awoke with the rising sun, a new week and hopes of a better week, than that of the previous week. He was scheduled to meet with the attorney's from Cochran Matthews and Associates to prepare for the preliminary portion of the case filed against Mitchell. He raised himself from bed and changed the channel on the television, which had been on all night, then lethargically walked to the bathroom were he turned the shower on hot and high. He walked back to his bedroom to pick out something to wear. He removed a gray Donna Karen suit and a grey dress shirt with a gray tie.
"This should do the job," Allen said to himself as he laid the clothes
on the end of his bed and reached into the closet for a belt and pair of
black shoes.
Allen was reminded to call his mother by an advertisement on the
television in support of the National Association of Breast Cancer. Allen
reached for the phone to dial the number when the faint sound of
running water halted his progress. Allen decided to take a shower and
call his mother when he felt a little more refreshed. He reached for the
remote control to turn on the stereo and turn off the television. Allen
began heading to the bathroom, when he heard Tupac's song Dear Mama
began to play on the stereo. He returned and sat on the edge of his bed
and thought about the words of the song:
"There's no way I can pay you back, but the plan is to show you that I
understand, you are appreciated.
Lady, don't you know we love you, Dear Mama
Sweet lady, place no one above you, you are appreciated
Sweet lady, don't you know we love you."
Allen reflected on his youth years and the many times his mother had
been there for him. He reflected on the many times that his mother told
him that she believed in him and that she was proud of him. He recalled
the advice that had been handed down over the years. The many times
that she had told him he was the only one that could make him
successful and that anything that he lived defeated in, was a choice. He
remembered her ending phrase after every visit and every phone call,
tomorrow is not promised.
Allen couldn't put off the phone call. He
located his cordless phone and press the function buttons for speed dial.
Allen waited as the phone rang several times before the answering
machine picked up the call. He left a message informing his mother that
he was calling just to see how she was doing after her third week of
chemotherapy treatment and to give him a call when she got back in.
Allen hung up the phone feeling complete. He felt that the phone call to
his mother was the start of a successful day. He noticed the time began
to slip away. He hurriedly walked into the steam filled bathroom and
quickly washed his body. As he dressed himself, his phone rang. He
pressed the speaker button to take the call while he continued to dress.
"Mr. Anthony," it was Mary calling.
"Good morning Mary, I am aware of my meeting this morning."
"You think you know me don't you?"
"I do know you."
"Well, Mr. Man, that is what I was calling you for but before you get in
front of yourself, I'm calling with changes."
