Allen listened to Sting's song, Missing You as he waited for Mr. Douglas to pick up the call. He sang and as the chorus played Mr. Douglas picked up the call.
"I see you're in a good mood," Mr. Douglas laughed, "you must have
good news to tell me."
"I think I have good news. It will depend on your answer to the news
that will make it good or bad."
"Well, give it to me plain. What is the damage?" Mr. Douglas asked.
"OK, plain. They have agreed to settle out of court for fifty-thousand
dollars, all of the medical bills paid and a face to face apology from
Mitchell."
"What else?" Mr. Douglas asked.
"Oh, they are willing to forget about the interviews that they had been
asked to do. You know the negative press."
"That's pretty much it. I got the call from the attorney five minutes
ago. I told her that I would get back to her in about ten minutes, after I
talked to you."
"Well, what do you think? Have you talked to Andrew to see if it was
a fifty-thousand dollar ass whipping?"
"Ted, this is my own opinion, but for this to be over with is better for
us all. If they are willing to forget about it, then that is even better for us
also. Besides, we have funds in the tank for situations like these."
"Yeah you're right. Get Mitchell's ass out here tonight and let's get
this over with. Let them know that we will FedEx the check to them
tomorrow. When it is all done, give me a call. I will be here until the end
of the week."
"Will do."
Allen ended the call with Mr. Douglas and smiled. Not for the end of
the case, but for the beginning of a possible friendship with Gwen. He
located her business card and called.
"Gwen Matthews please," Allen said as the soft-spoken receptionist
answered, "Ms. Matthews, it is a go. Please inform them that the check
will be sent via FedEx tomorrow and Mitchell will be here this evening.
Let them know that he will be in there office tomorrow morning to
apologize. With regard to the medical bills, it will be included with the
check."
Allen listened to Gwen inform him that she would make the call and if
there were any other requests she would let him know. Allen thanked
her for her assistance and asked if this would be the conclusion of their
business and the beginning of their friendship. Gwen told him that it
depended on him and if he would be cooking dinner tonight to celebrate
the end of the case.
