Allen thought about his fathers question for a moment before answering.
"Well," Steven asked again, "do you like her?"
"Pop, I love her. I feel like shes the woman that Ive been waiting for.
Like she is the change that my life needed. You know what has been
missing. That final element."
"I could tell that you felt very strong about her."
"Hows that?"
"For one, you never bring anyone home and secondly, you never show
any affection in front of your mother and me. Son I am happy for you. I
hope that you and Gwen find all that you search for in your relationship.
You think you will marry her?"
"It is funny you ask Pop, cause I have envisioned myself married to
Gwen. The funny thing is that I envisioned it days after I met her."
"Well if you can think it you can achieve it. Well at least that is what
R says."
"R," Allen questioned.
"Yeah, R. Kelly. He said that in that song for Mikes movie."
"You going hip hop on me Pop?"
"Boy I was hip well before you starting thinking about being hip. How
you think you got here? It was from the game I had."
"Yeah and the fact that Mama chose you."
"Yeah that did help." Steven laughed. "Well Son what you gonna do?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean are you going to marry her?"
"I would like to, but I just met her."
"Yeah."
"I just met her, I dont know her well enough to marry her yet."
"Son, you can know someone all your life and never know them. I
dont know your mother completely and we have been together for,"
Steven hesitated as he tried to recall the number of years he and Helen
had been married, "for, for, for a long time. The point is I am still
learning her after all these years."
"But what about the arguments that I know we will have? And the
disagreements, the lack of understanding, how do I handle that?"
"Son, arguments are not necessarily a bad thing. They can actually
strengthen a relationship. Besides, there is nothing like make-up sex."
Steven smiled. "See you have to understand that people who argue still
love one another, they just dont agree at that moment."
"I understand that, but I dont want to go through it at all."
"Son in order for a relationship to survive you have to know what bad
times are. You cant have good times everyday. You have to be able to
accept the good and the bad and believe me, you will have some bad
times."
"I see your point."
"So when are you two getting married?"
Allen looked at his father and smiled as Steven did the same.
"Youll be the first to know pop."
