Calorie was a computer programmer who had earned his name during his last year at FAMU. The football coach had told him that he needed to gain weight if he planned to be the starting nose tackle on the team that year. The coach told him that he needed to eat foods that were high in calories to produce the kind of build that the coach was looking for. As a joke, the rest of the team began calling him calorie and it stuck with him off the field. In all, there were six guys, who for the most part stuck together.
There's Donte', who found his calling after graduating from Stanford
University as an architect and had the nickname of Gigolo. He was a
pretty boy and a ladies' man. Gigolo was the green-eyed bandit in the
group. He was light skinned with the curly top and faded on the side
cut. He stood 6 foot 2 inches tall and was well built.
Then there's Walter, who didn't need a nickname because he felt like
his mother named him Walter, so that's what you call him. Walter was a
graduate of Tuskegee University and an editor at the Los Angeles Times.
He was a tall, bald and skinny bookworm and a no non-sense kind of
guy, who believed in work before pleasure. On the flip side of Walter was
his brother William, who did have a nickname.
William was known as Cupid. He was a promoter in Los Angeles as well as Atlanta and New
York. William earned the name Cupid on the account that he was able to
bring people together in love. But just as the mythical cupid, he wasn't
able to keep them together. Cupid stood 6 foot 6 inches tall, dark
skinned with naturally curly hair and a true basketball player.
Cupid played for Sacramento State University until a career ending injury
helped him see the importance of an education. He believed in his
opinion and respected the opinion of others. He was the one in the
group that listened to all aspects of a situation before giving input.
Then there is Charles, who was simply known as C. Charles found his calling
and the ultimate prize as a counselor and little league baseball coach
after graduating from the University of Southern California. Charles felt
that children truly are the future and that he needed to play an active
part in helping to securing the future for them.
Finally, there is Allen, and because of his passion for love, the fellas decided to call him Jones,
which was short for Love Jones. Allen was a divisional marketing
manager with Nike Sportswear in Los Angeles, as well as a romantic and
graduate of UC Berkeley.
With 2:00pm approaching, Charles suggested that they head for
Calories' house. Allen agreed since he had nothing to do until work
tomorrow. Allen and Charles reached Calories house, to find everyone
sitting around the table near the pool watching the pre-game show.
"Hey C, what up Jones?" echoed from the fellas.
"Pull up a chair," Cupid said.
