Jes closed the car door and walked slowly to the house as Tanya drove off. Jes walked into the house to find Gwen on the sofa listening to a Commodores CD and writing in her journal.
"Hey girl," Gwen spoke, "did you have a nice time?"
"Yes, it was very interesting," Jes responded, as she went into her
bedroom to change clothes.
"Where did you guy's go?"
Gwen asked.
"Over to the Shark Bar,"
Jes yelled from the bedroom.
"What did you
do tonight?"
Jes asked to change the subject before Gwen asked about
her co-worker.
"Nothing, I decided not to go out. I've been sitting here writing and
reminiscing with this old music."
"What are you writing?"
"A little poetry."
"Will you share it with me?" Jes asked, "you know how I like to hear
your poetry."
"Sure, you know how I like to share it."
Jes found her way back to the living room with her a glass of white
zinfandel.
"OK I'm ready," Jes said, "what's the name of this one?"
"Next time."
With her soft voice, Gwen began her poem.
"The first time I fell in love, a fool took my heart
I never knew, I never knew
Love had blinded me
I couldn't see, I couldn't see
The first time I fell in love, I gave my heart to a fool
I never knew, I never knew
I was blinded by love
I couldn't see, I couldn't see
The next time I fall in love, love will be true
My blood will bleed true love
My heart will beat true love
As far as cupid's arrow can go
My true love will reach
To the deepest part of my heart
True love will dwell
Before I was a fool
Next time, next time"
Jes sat amidst the Commodores CD, Gwen's genial voice and her
glass of wine and smiled at Gwen.
"Girl you do have a way with words."
"You like it?" Gwen asked.
"You know I do." Jes answered as she took a sip of her wine.
The girls sat and listened to the music in the dimly lit room. No
words were spoken, no movements made. As the CD played, Jes rose
from the sofa and headed off to bed.
"Good night,"
Jes said.
"Good night."
