Jes noticed that the message light on her phone was blinking. She thought to check the message, but being nosy was more important to her. Besides she thought, the message isn't going anywhere. Jes walked down the wide hall towards Marvin's office. She wondered, with as such good a shape as Marvin was in, what could have happened to him.
It had been Five months since their ordeal and she knew that he had a few
doctors' appointments in the last few months. Jes reached Marvin's
office and saw that he was being prepared to be transported to the
hospital. She remembered her promise to Mrs. Edgewater and walked
hurriedly back to her desk to retrieve the phone number that she had
written down.
"Excuse me," Jes said to the medical staff,
"while you were attending
to Mr. Edgewater his mother called. She asked if you could call her and
tell her what is going on with her son?"
Jes handed the phone number to medical technician and turned to
walk away when she heard Marvin call her name.
"Jes," Marvin said weakly as though he was taking his last breath.
"Jes, thank-you and I'm sorry."
Jes rolled her eyes at Marvin and turned to walk back to her desk.
She questioned herself as to what he was thanking her for, when she
wanted to tell him that sorry couldn't undo the invasion that had
befallen her at his hands. Jes turned around her swivel chair that sat
behind her desk facing the wall, and flopped down in it. She again
thought of what could have happened to Marvin. She knew from her
brief encounter with him that he was physically fit. She knew that he
worked out daily at Bally's Total Fitness and he ate very healthy. After a
few minutes of analyzing Marvin's conditioning, Jes concluded that he
must have passed out from working out too much.
While Jes began tending to the work that she had abandoned for
lunch, Mr. Maguire, the CEO and head lawyer of the firm approached
her. Because he was rarely seen, it was a pleasant surprise for Jes when
she saw him standing in front of her.
"May I help you sir?" Jes asked nervously.
"Yes, and I didn't mean to startle you. My apologies, please accept
them."
"Not a problem at all, and I do accept your apology. What can I do for
you?" Jes asked, still nervous.
"Everyone has always said that Jessica Lewis is always straight to
business. Now I know what they mean,
" Mr. Maguire smiled.
"I'm not sure that I know what you mean," Jes returned the smile.
"Oh you do know how to smile?"
"Yes I do," Jes said blushing.
"Well let me be the first to say that you have a beautiful smile."
"What makes you think you are the first to say that I have a beautiful
smile?" Jes said in a confident tone.
"Oh, excuse me," Mr. Maguire cleared his throat.
"Then please allow
me to be the first today to say that you have a beautiful smile."
"Thank-you," Jes said.
"Mr. Maguire, know that my mama raised me
to know the difference between a casual conversation and an intimate
conversation. I'd say that this conversation has nothing to do with your
firm?"
