Jes walked over to Gwen and told her that she was just in the spirit of kindness and that she should shut-up before the feeling suddenly left. Gwen laughed with Jes and shut her mouth. Gwen knew that Jes had a date with Marvin last night, so she wondered if he was the reason Jes was in such a good mood.
"So how was your date last night?"
Jes didn't respond, she just continued singing the song playing.
"So I take it you're going to church this morning?" Gwen asked Jes.
"Girl, you know that this is the only time I get to meet real men."
Jes laughed, Gwen didn't.
"Is to meet men the only reason you go to church?" Gwen asked.
"No, I go to hear the word."
"I wonder sometimes. Besides, what happened to the new guy you
met a few weeks ago at your job; didn't you go out with him last night?"
Jes didn't respond.
"Well Jes, are you still dating him?"
Gwen asked with a serious look on her face. Jes stood there with her
head hanging low stirring the eggs she was cooking. Gwen didn't know
what had happened with Jes' new friend; all she knew is that Jes was
crazy about him.
"So what happened?" Gwen asked with sympathy.
Jes stood in silence, with tears in her eyes. Gwen moved closer to Jes
to give her the condolence that she needed as well as the ear of
friendship that their relationship had gained. Again Gwen asked Jes
what had happened. Jes finally spoke.
"Gwen, when will I learn to be as patient as you when it comes to
finding a man? When will I learn not to put myself in a position were a
man expects to get a piece of my ass?"
"Baby what are you talking about?" Gwen asked as she turned off the
stove and escorted Jes to a chair at the table.
"I'm talking about Marvin. Gwen I really liked him, for once I had
really found a man that I would be willing to slow down with."
"So what happened?" Gwen asked again.
"Well, Wednesday night we went out to dinner and everything was
wonderful. We drove Highway 1, we walked along the beach in Malibu,
and we had ice cream on the Promenade in Santa Monica. Then we went
back to his place and watched a few movies. He made a move on me and
for the first time in my life, I wanted to wait because I truly cared about
this man. In such a short time I cared about this man."
Not understanding what the problem would be with Jes wanting to wait,
Gwen asked her what was wrong with that. Jes sat and with Gwen's
question she began to cry more.
"Jes, what's wrong?"
"Gwen, like I said, I wanted to wait, I did, but that son of a bitch
didn't. Gwen I sat there for the first time in my life wanting to wait. I
wanted to wait, because I really liked him. I wanted to wait. I really
wanted to wait."
