She sat in the office she had converted from a bedroom and began to write out the ideas she had come up with to make the auction a success. She had received donations from several companies who had employees participating in the event as well as companies who just wanted to make a donation to the American Breast Cancer Foundation on their behalf. With the auction only two weeks away, Tanya received last minute requests from businesses that still wanted to participate in the event and being an event that she knew would help thousands of people, she could only accommodate them.
Tanya spent the rest of the evening and part of the early morning
working out details that would need to be approved by the committee
governing the event before it could be added. She wrote out several
arrangements for the procession of events to give alternatives for the
selection committee. One arrangement in particular she liked involved
the participants sitting and talking with their possible dates.
She wanted
them to mingle over complimentary hors doeuvres and drinks while
wearing evening gowns and tuxedos. She also made plans for a swimsuit
competition and for fun, as well as to raise more money for the
foundation. Each participant would man a kissing booth for five minutes
while other participants were being auctioned off. Tanya also gave those
bidding, three choices for dinner with their dates, that way she was sure
to have adequate protection for each person.
Tanya arrived in the office after a grueling night of decision-making
refreshed and went right into a meeting with the committee governing the
event. She presented her ideas and its options to them and to her
surprise they all agreed on the same theme that Tanya liked most. Now
that she had a concrete theme that she could build on, she needed a
budget to make it a complete success.
She initially asked for fifteen
thousand dollars, but the committee quickly turned her down. They
offered her seventy-five hundred dollars but after hearing all of the
arrangements and decorations Tanya had planned, they agreed to give
her twelve thousand dollars. Tanya accepted what she thought was a
limited budget and began to substantiate arrangements that had already
been made.
First she called the florist and told them to begin the flower
arrangements. Next, she called an interior decorator that was suggested
to her by one of the committee members. Tanya had one of her own in
mind, but wanted to be a team player and use all of her resources.
Besides, her contact was charging through the roof because they knew
the history of the company paying and knew they would get top dollar if
they charged top dollar. Tanya called caterers, photographers and
several DJs that she knew of through word of mouth. She called the
printing store to give them the ok on the order that she placed the week
before and reiterated their promise of having the order completed twenty-
four hours after the order is confirmed.
Now that the calls to make the
event run efficiently were made, she needed to make the calls that would
make the candidates look their best. She called BCBGs, BeBes, Ann
Taylor and Saks 5th Avenue for clothing and Nordstroms, Charles David,
Kenneth Cole and Coach for shoes. She accepted all that each
establishment offered to give for the event and in return she offered to
promote the names and business of each store.
Tanya felt relieved with
the results of her planning and decided to end the office day early. She
wanted to formally introduce herself to each of the new companies,
businesses and establishments that were participating in the event. She
closed down her computer, packed up any work that she would do from
home and informed her secretary that she would be out of the office until
tomorrow and if anyone needed to reach her they could catch her on her
cellular phone.
