Then she would decide what would be the best course to take. "Jes, it's Gwen. You will never guess what I found in my office when I got back from lunch. Girl, Brandon sent roses and a bottle of white zinfandel to the office. I don't know, you know that I haven't talked to him in over a year. That's why I was calling you, I wanted to know what you think I should do. He left a message for me, asking if I would call him on his cellular phone. What would you do? Good, I'm going to call. I know, you said that you wouldn't call, when has your advice worked for you, let alone anyone else? Bye, I'll tell you what happened later tonight."
Gwen proceeded with her plan, by searching though her purse for
CJ's work number. After a two-minute search for the number that
managed to elude her, she surrendered to mental fatigue. Gwen
composed herself before making the call to Brandon. She thought of
what she'd say. She decided to be short and to the point and as
respectable as she could be. Gwen reached for her Rolodex to locate the
number that her memory failed to resuscitate.
"Brandon, its' Gwen. I'm fine and yourself? Yes, I did get the wine
and the roses, and no I did not place the roses in water. I placed them in
the trash though. I didn't tell you to buy them. Brandon please I'm not
mad at you, I am over you. Why would I be mad at you for throwing
away seven years for sex? Hey, you slept with that woman I didn't. Yes
let's put it all behind us. Brandon Lewis Johnson, why would I want to
have dinner with you? What do we need to talk about? Brandon, there
is no us. You screwed up over a year ago and that ended us.
Furthermore, I am seeing someone. As if it's any of your business, his
name is um, um" Gwen searched for a name to use in her lie. "His name
is Allen, yeah Allen Anthony. Yes it is. I've been seeing him about four
months now, and things are great. Brandon, there's no chance for us
because there is no us. Thanks for the thought of kindness, but I'm
happy now. You take care. Goodbye."
Gwen hung up feeling that she had added closure to her past. She
exhaled and smiled as she turned to tend to the work that had piled up
on her desk while she was in court earlier in the morning. As she sifted
through the mountain of court documents, she noticed a brief that had
urgent stamped on the face of it. Gwen began to examine the contents
and discovered that it was a contract that was written up by the partners
offering her a new title.
"Partner!" Gwen shouted at the top of her voice.
Gwen got out of her chair as fast as she could and ran into Mr.
Cochran's office to let him know that she was more interested in the offer
than he could possibly know.
