"It looked as if he were campaigning to become Mayor of the Underworld."
Count Is Clear
"What do you mean, you're trying to help me? Don't
justify it by claiming it is an act of kindness. Dude, why do
you want me to suffer so badly? Is it because I'm a Raider's
fan?"
"No Count, I don't want you to suffer. I'm not sure what
I want. I took the job, and you need to get on the up-and-up,
and fl y right."
"Batiste, we fi red the same rifl e; you have the same
problems as me."
I blow air out of my mouth like I am whistling with no
sound, "So now it's my fault?"
"You're a Marine too!"
"Count, don't make this about the Corps!"
"If you weren't a Marine, I'd just kick your ass."
"You're just mad, because when it comes right down to
where the cheese binds, you have to change."
"I will pay Heck. I really want to change. I have a good
woman. I don't know what I would do if she found out and
left me. I think about it all the time."
"You think too much."
"First time I've ever been accused of that."
"That's the fucking truth."
"Heck, I want to get right. I want to have a good
marriage. There is a lot of work to do. I am willing to
make it work, and to put in the effort. I need to talk to my
wife, and get started."
"Man, that's what I wanted to hear you say all along.
The key is to stop thinking it's all about you, and stop being
so selfi sh."
"I can't help it; selfi sh is all I've ever known."
"So, Charlie. What are you going to do?"
"I don't know. I don't even know what to say. It's like
I got a mouthful of cornfl akes and I'm waiting for them to
soften."
"I'm not saying that you can fi x it over night, or that
you can fi x any of it in any length of time. What I am
saying is that the bottom line is that you can try to fi x it
together. You just have to fi gure out what is wrong with it,
and stop pointing fi ngers. It is clear to me that you are both
to blame. Don't you think that if you approached Claire with
a real desire to make things better that she would show some
interest? I'm wrong a lot, but I have an uncanny knack for
guessing. You can't tell me that she is happy with the way
things are."
"What am I gonna do, take her to Dr. Phil?"
"If that's what it takes."
"I can't take all this shit public, man."
"You don't really have to. The trick is to have the desire
on both ends to meet in the middle. If you both want your
marriage to work, you can begin to work on it."
"So what are you gonna do?"
"Huh?"
"With the tapes, the photos, the Power-point
presentation?"
"Oh. I guess I hadn't thought about that much in the
last couple days."
"Claire is going to want to see something."
"I did make the other tape. You know the one that has
the good stuff on it."
"Do you really think she'd just keep digging, because
she really knows me? I mean, really knows what I am?"
"You know Claire better than I do."
"Maybe I should just save her some time, and have
you tell her the truth. Unless, you think I could really
change?"
"Charlie, do you think you can change?"
"I don't know Heck. Maybe the best thing to do is to
tell the truth, and then beg her to forgive me. The change
can start from there."
Human beings by their very nature make mistakes; it
is unreasonable to expect an error-free performance. What
bloody good was human adaptability if people weren't
willing to change? Was that not why no penal system really
worked to prevent crime? People will not change unless they
decide to do it for themselves. No amount of time served
can do the job of conversion unless the person changes his
frame of mind on his own. The secret hope of correctional
departments is that they will. Every warden and director
knows that if the department appears successful because
of some manipulated success rate, it is because inmates
realized all on their own that they were involved in wrongdoing.
We all know it was no miracle performed on our part.
Yet, it was a delusion worth having from time to time.
